FOE Student Scores Double Win With Parking Solution
On 31st October, a student from the Faculty of Engineering, Ng Chin Kit, was named a winner at the MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA) with his final year project titled “IoT-enabled Outdoor Smart Parking System”. Mr Ng’s win is especially meaningful. The competition is an annual awards program organized by PIKOM to give recognition to outstanding achievements of individuals, students, entrepreneurs, SMEs and organizations in Malaysian ICT. With his win, Mr Ng has been invited to represent Malaysia in the upcoming Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards to be held in Bangladesh.
Moreover, his project also won first prize at 2017 IEEE Malaysia FYP Competition under the track of Computational Intelligence.
Mr Ng’s project was designed to be a smart parking solution that automatically detects parking vacancies and illegal parking in outdoor environments. It was proposed so as to provide a cost-effective solution that could uplift existing outdoor parking facilities through accurate detection results despite the influences of environmental variations. With the systems, drivers could obtain real-time parking enforcers could effectively monitor and react to improper parking incidents.
Announced on 24th may 2017, the competition ran over a period of four months. Mr. Ng went up against six finalists from five local universities including MMU to emerge as the Winner for the category “Best of Tertiary Student Project - Hardware / Software”. His supervisor was Mr. Cheong Soon Nyean.
