Team iSPARKS Wins 3rd Prize at the Disrupt-IT Challenge
On 28 January 2018,team iSPARKS which led by Ng Chin Kit from (FOE) and his teammates Erfan Haji mohammad hossein memar (FOE) and Ng Chin Ann (FCI) won third prize at the Disrupt-IT Challenge at MaGIC headquarters in Cyberjaya. This competition was jointly organised by five Malaysian universities - University Malaysia of Computer Science & Engineering (UNIMY), Multimedia University (MMU), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM),Taylor's University, and Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA).
The Disrupt-IT Challenge aimed to facilitate greater entrepreneurs in IT or tech-preneurs in proposing a tech-based "disruptiveness" project that can support or enable increased affordability, sustainability and innovativeness among industries and communities alike among institute higher learning (IHL) students. The competition received more than 100 submissions,and only ten finalist were selected including three teams from MMU which were team iSPARKS, team ComePung Appand team TutorTags.
An Integrated Outdoor Smart Parking System (iSPARKS) was presented with the aims of enhancing parking experience for drivers and realising judicious parking enforcement.The system uses IP camera,base station and deeplearning methods to accurately detect outdoor parking vacancies and illegal parking.The adoption of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) ensures optimal balance between discriminability and robustness for image recognition tasks,thus offering robust detection performance under different weather conditions with varying light intensity and shadow patterns
Besides demonstrating technical capabilities,the team also wowed the audience with viable business model and collaboration with the industry. The team received RMS,000 and they also get the opportunity to develop a continuedrelationship with industry professionals who will serveas mentors and advise the team in furthering their project in the future.
