Alumni Highlights: Tan Chin Mui

Centre of Alumni (CfA) proundly presents MMU alumna, Tan Chin Mui – a Malaysian-born director based in Beijing, China and a Multimedia University graduate of the Faculty of Multimedia in Film and Animation (Hons) in 2002. Currently, she is very active in the Malaysian independent film scene working as a producer, editor, script writer and on occasion an actress. In 2004 alongside Amir Muhammad, James Lee and Liew Seng Tat, she founded Da Huang Pictures.

Tan is famed for her award winning debut feature film “Love Conquers All” which won the Tiger Award from the 36th International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film had also won the New Currents Award at the 11th Pusan International Film Festival in the year prior. Tan has also released many award winning films throughout her career and is still continuing to make and create films that highlights the ever present social issues in society.

 

Tan has also been featured in a Jacky Yeap’s debut feature film in 2020 called “Sometime, Sometime” where she is both the producer and the actress. In the film, Tan assumes the role of a single mother with a teenage son. Currently she is directing a film called “Barbarian Invasion” where she also plays the leading role as a washed up actress who goes on a journey to find herself after receiving martial arts training.
