FOB’s Seminar on Tackling Contemporary Challenges of Ageing
The Faculty of BUsiness (FOB), Multimnedia University and Persatuan Siswazah Wanita Malaysia have organised a 1-day seminar for women aged 40 and above at Equatorial Hotel, Melaka on 30 October 2017. The seminar encompassed the various aspects of promoting a healthy and enhanced quality of life for women in an ageing population.
The State Women, Family Development and Welfare Committee Datuk Latipah Omar presented the keynote address for the seminar. Datuk Latipah quoted findings by the Department of Statistics Malaysia that the country will be in the "ageing society" by the year 2020 where Malaysia's population aged 65 years or older will reach 7.2%.
She further emphasised that the rising cost of living mainly in relation to medical expenses has created additional pressure on household income. Dr. Mariati Norhashim from Multimedia University spoke about addressing the challenges of ageing in order to maintain the quality of life. Dr. Mariati accentuated the importance of being physically active, especially towards the golden years. Regualar physical activities, good nutrition and adequate rest will help individuals to age gracefully. Other activities carried out during the seminar included healthy cooking demonstration and physical exercise that are suitable for women in their 40s.
150 women from various institutions has been invited as participants of the seminar, including those from Multimedia University, Usahanita Negeri Melaka, Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat, Persatuan Jururawat Malaysia, Persatuan Keluarga Polis Kontijen Melaka (PERKEP) and representatives from nursing homes. Many parties have contributed generously to the event, including health screening by Hospital Melaka, Anlene milk samples by Fonterra Malaysia, cosmetic products by MAry KAy and various pharmaceutical companies. The seminar received and overwhelming response from its participants.
As a whole, this 1-day events has imparted imperative guidelines to the participants on way to cope with challenges of ageing. The collaboration between the Faculty of Business and Persatuan Siswazah Wanita Malaysia is another community centric initiative that will add to the holistic growth of MMU's stature.
