MMU Debate Team Performs Well in the ASTAR Open Debate

MMU Malay Language Debate Team performed well in the recent Tuanku Abdul Rahman College (ASTAR) Open Debate from 26 until 30 January 2018 at University of Malaya. MMU team competed in two categories;main category andjunior category.The main category debaters were represented by Amirul Asyraaf bin Mohd Alwi (FOL),Nor Shuhaidah bt Abdul Shukor (FOE),Mohamad Haizul lkhwan bin Ridzuan (FOE) and Umar Mustaqim bin Umar Li (FOE). Meanwhile, the junior category debaters were Mohamad Faizul lzwan bin Mohd Nordin (FOL),Fahrni lzzuddin bin Halim (FOE), Mohamad Raziekh bin Md Rizal (FOM) and Mohd Faizal bin Ismail (FOE).

During the competition, the junior debate team was against the debate powerhouse-International Islamic University Malaysia (llUM) in the finalmatch. The team put up brilliant performance before losing to the better side. However,the team captain,Mohamad Falzul lzwan has been named as Best Speaker In the final match,and the team brought home the first-runner up awards and accolades. Meanwhile, the senior team also showed resilient performance before losing to another debate powerhouse-Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in the quarter-final round. Fahrni lzzuddin and Amirul Asyraf were ranked at number four and nine respectively in the Top 10 debaters chart for this 21st edition of ASTAR. YB Khairul Azwan bin Harun,the Senator of Malaysian Parliament and Prof. Datuk Dr. Rohana binti Yusof, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Students Affairs) of University of Malaya graced the prize giving ceremony to allwinners.

Commenting on the results, the team advisors dedicated the achievement to commitment, discipline and solid teamwork of debaters. The team also acknowledged the strong support of our Students Affairs Division (STAD). Besides, four of our alumnidebating team members,which were Myer lyemman bin Yusoff, Muhammad Rafiq Akmal bin Mohd Daud,Ahmad Hazwan bin Hamdan and Ahmad Naszuan bin Mohd Nasib who had spent their precious weekend in sharing the valuable oratory skills and experience throughout the competition. These achievements in the first month of 201B offer bright prospect to the MMU Malay Language Debate Team to continue their agile performance in future competitions.
